Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic, partial opioid agonist used in Medication Assisted Treatment and opioid detox programs. Partial agonists bind to the given receptor, but have only partial efficacy compared with a full agonist such as methadone. It works by binding to the mu receptors which are responsible for opioid intoxication. Buprenorphine has a high affinity, but low intrinsic activity at the mu receptor, meaning it displaces other opioids, while having a less intoxicating effect.
