NN19 - QA 7: Public Policy Advocacy Afternoon

In preparation of Hill Day, this session will equip participants to have an effective meeting with their legislators. We will discuss what to expect and how to make NAATP’s message relevant to the District and State. Current legislation and policy will be reviewed, along with how to continue advocacy once attendees return home.

Mark Dunn is a partner in Veritas Advisors, a consulting firm with over 100 years of collective experience in shaping public policy. Mark serves as NAATP’s Director of Public Policy and has represented NAATP at the federal level since 2007. He has extensive experience working with trade associations and professional organizations, as well as federal agencies and congress. He has a personal passion for recovery.

Sherri Layton, LCDC, CCS, has worked in addiction treatment for 40+ years and with La Hacienda Treatment Center since 1992. As Outpatient Services Administrator, she manages their outpatient, continuing care, and alumni services, and coordinates La Hacienda's legislative involvement on the state and national level. Sherri has served on NAADAC’s Public Policy Committee since 2008 and is currently Co-Chair. She also serves on the Legislative Committee for the Association of Substance Abuse Programs – Texas. She co-chairs Texas’ Recovery Day at the Capitol. She has a BA in Psychology and completed an MBA with an emphasis on leadership in 2009.

Scott Munson has been employed at Sundown M Ranch in Yakima, WA, since 1985 and has served as its Executive Director since 1997. Scott is a Past Chair of NAATP and currently chairs the NAATP Public Policy Committee. He is also the Legislative Chair of the Washington State Association of Alcoholism and Addiction Programs and the Vice-Chair of the Chemical Dependency Studies Program’s Advisory Board at Yakima Valley College.

Nick Motu is responsible for the overall marketing of Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, including managing business development activities, advertising, PR/communications, driving national and regional public advocacy efforts that support treatment issues, and advocating for expanded access to treatment benefits. Prior to his 20+ year tenure at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, Motu served in marketing and publishing management roles at St. Paul Companies, Northwestern National Life and several daily newspapers. Motu earned a BA in business/journalism from the College of St. Thomas. He has received numerous awards for his work in communications, advertising, and publishing.

Edward Diehl began his career in the chemical dependency treatment field in 1976. A year later, Ed joined his family at Seabrook as a Certified Alcoholism Counselor (CAC). In 1986, Ed was named Vice-President of Clinical and Community Services, overseeing all treatment activities and external communications. In 1989, Ed was appointed President of Seabrook – the position he holds today. Ed’s expertise lies in the areas of healthcare financing, development, public policy, and managing within a rapidly changing environment. In 2019, Ed will be celebrating 45 years of sobriety.
