Addiction treatment marketing practices have become a primary area of concern in recent years. Misleading marketing practices, regardless of intention, damage patients and undermine the credibility of the field at large. This session will focus on Ethical considerations in treatment marketing and discuss problematic and best practices for marketing healthcare services.

Jay Crosson began his career with Cumberland Heights in 1993 and accepted the role of Chief Executive Officer in 2015. Prior to becoming the CEO, Jay served as the CFO for the organization. He currently serves on the Board of NAATP, sits on the Quality Assurance Committee, and is Chair of the NAATP Ethics Committee. Jay is a graduate from MTSU, with an MBA from Belmont University. Additionally, he is a grateful recovering alumnus of Cumberland Heights, having been a patient in 1989. His personal experience of treatment and the transformative power of the 12 Steps shape his leadership principles today.

Outside of working in addiction treatment, she is a fully committed Florida and National legislative reform advocate. She is the Assistant Executive Director of the Delray Beach Drug Task Force, Vice President of Unite for Ethics Now, Vice President of Southeast Florida Recovery Advocates, founder of URecovery at the University of Miami, a participant in the Miami Dade County Opioid Task Force and the Palm Beach County Sober Home Task Force, and actively involved with National Alliance of Model State Drug Law.

Michelle Rusk is a senior attorney in the Division of Advertising Practices, Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTC. She joined the FTC from private practice in 1990. During her career at the agency, Ms. Rusk has focused on FTC policy and enforcement efforts related to marketing of foods, dietary supplements, and other health-related products and services. Ms. Rusk is currently part of a team addressing deceptive marketing practices in the addiction treatment industry. She received her BA from Harvard University and her JD from the Georgetown University Law Center.

Peter Thomas is the Quality Assurance Officer for NAATP. He brings six years’ experience working in addiction treatment, including roles in executive leadership. Prior to joining NAATP, Peter worked as the COO for Chapter 5 Counseling Center. Peter has dedicated much of his time to working with regulators to enhance access to quality behavioral healthcare. He served as President for the Northern Arizona Recovery Association and co-founded the Arizona Addiction Advocacy Coalition. Through these roles, Peter assisted in the drafting and passage of state legislation protecting consumers, while also enhancing the efficacy and reputation of providers.
