Caron Treatment Centers, a long-standing NAATP member, has received national attention for its innovative use of GLP-1 medications such as Zepbound and Ozempic to help reduce cravings for alcohol and illicit drugs. The November 16 front-page feature in The Washington Post, “The surprising new use for GLP-1s: Alcohol and drug addiction,” highlights Caron’s pilot program treating more than 130 patients with promising early results.

Washington Post Headline

Originally developed for diabetes and weight loss, GLP-1 medications may help quiet the brain’s reward circuitry, muting the intense craving signals associated with Substance Use Disorders. While the science is still emerging, ongoing studies funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse suggest significant potential across alcohol, stimulant, and compulsive behavior disorders.

Caron’s responsible, evidence-informed approach underscores the innovation happening across NAATP member organizations. Their team is clear about limitations, including cost, insurance challenges, and the need for comprehensive treatment models that integrate therapy and long-term support.

Upcoming NAATP Education

To support providers in understanding this rapidly developing area, NAATP is preparing new educational content on GLP-1s and their potential role in addiction treatment.

Webinars and resources will explore:
• The expanding research and clinical considerations
• Ethical and administrative factors for organizations
• How pharmacological tools may integrate with whole-person care

NAATP National 2026 in Amelia Island will also feature dedicated sessions on this topic, including insights from clinicians and researchers and discussions on implementation and long-term recovery support.

Details will be shared as programs are finalized.

NAATP congratulates Caron Treatment Centers for this important recognition and for advancing a conversation that may shape the future of addiction medicine.
