Senate Passes Bill Which Cuts Medicaid

Senate Passes Bill Which Cuts Medicaid

The U.S. Senate just passed by the narrowest margin possible, the reconciliation bill which only needs a majority vote in the Senate. The legislation includes an extension of the President’s tax cuts and must then be offset by reductions in other spending programs. Since changes were made in the Senate to the previously passed House bill, the House of Representatives must reconsider it.

NAATP, along with the entire healthcare field has major concerns regarding the cuts to Medicaid. It is estimated by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, that up to 12 million individuals will lose coverage if this bill finds its way to the President’s desk.

In its current form, the bill imposes work requirements on numerous recipients, makes it more cumbersome to apply and punishes states that currently allow undocumented individuals to qualify.

Medicaid is the largest healthcare payer in the country. Losing coverage for millions of individuals would not only jeopardize their quality of life, but it would also put an enormous strain on the entire system.

With only one opportunity left to derail this enormous cut in Medicaid, the time is NOW to call your U.S. Representative and ask them to vote no on the reconciliation bill.

You may find your representative and contact information here.

The Administration is pressuring Congress to pass this by the end of this week. We must act urgently.
