2025 Support Act Becomes Law

2025 Support Act Becomes Law

After a lengthy journey, the latest version of the Support Act finally became law this week.  NAATP supported its passage and has been asking Congress to pass it for months. The legislation (SUPPORT Act) reauthorizes key prevention, treatment and recovery programs for patients with substance use disorders. It continues funding programs to support the workforce for substance use disorder and mental health treatment facilities. It also provides funding for recovery housing and treatment programs for pregnant women.

The original law was passed in 2018 because of the opioid epidemic. At that time, the SUPPORT Act represented what the government called a monumental shift in the federal government’s strategy. Building on prior laws like the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) of 2016 and the 21st Century Cures Act, it moved beyond piecemeal grants and enforcement actions to rewire the nation’s healthcare, regulatory, and public health systems in an attempt to confront the epidemic. NAATP has always supported the legislation, understanding that it does not solve all the problems associated with substance use disorder treatment, but that it took positive steps forward.

NAATP appreciates our members who helped encourage passage as well as the many coalition members who joined in support.
