About This Organization:

SUWS of the Carolinas is a premier wilderness program for adolescents and teens ages 10-17 who are struggling with addiction, mental health concerns, and behavioral difficulties. Located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Old Fort, North Carolina, we employ traditional therapeutic activities in a real-life setting, away from the pressures of everyday life. Wilderness therapy has proven effective at reducing stress and anxiety, increasing therapeutic engagement, and preparing participants to return home ready to continue healthy habits. Our Seasons Program serves children ages 10-13 who have mental health concerns. Our strength-based approach can lead to increased self-esteem, self-awareness, and better relationships. Phoenix Outdoor is a program for teens ages 14-17 who are struggling with addiction concerns and co-occurring mental health challenges. We embrace the 12-Step recovery model, as well as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Bravo and Luna are our gender-specific treatment tracks for teens ages 14-17. The wilderness setting at SUWS of the Carolinas can be the perfect backdrop for young people to take on the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of healing and recovery while receiving comprehensive support. Our expert staff focuses on treatment within our unique setting and program, and participants receive personalized care with our 3-to-1 student-to-staff ratio. Our program consists of four distinct phases designed to build trust and accountability. In the Safety phase, which lasts one to two days, we help students acclimate to their new group environment. Students then move on to the Individual phase, where they can learn the connection between freedom and responsibility while practicing effective coping skills and habits. In the Community phase, students can develop positive relationship and communication skills with peers, family, and friends. Finally, the Responder phase focuses on developing leadership and character. Trail’s End is our three-day graduation process, a time to reengage with family and celebrate the goals you’ve achieved. It also includes an all-day parent workshop. At SUWS of the Carolinas, we know how essential the family relationship can be to long-term healing, and we value the role families can play in supporting their children.
